Chapter 16
âIâll take the night shift with Margo.â Cal stood beside Fernando, who was having trouble keeping his eyes open, slumped in the armchair.
Fernando rubbed his forehead. âIâd like to fight you on this, but Iâm too exhausted.â
Cal pulled up a chair to sit next to him. âYou feeling okay?â
Fernando scooted forward to pat Margoâs foot. âItâs been over a month. Dr. Kim says he canât decipher Tedâs notes. He doesnât know how much of the healing vial to give to Margo.â
âHeâll figure it out.â
Fernandoâs eyes were distant as he stared at his sister. âHalloween is coming. Margoâs favorite.â
âShe does love to dress up.â
âMostly she dressed me up.â Fernando winced. âI only went along to make her happy.â
âOh shit, there better be photos.â Cal imagined an array of embarrassing costumes that Margo would have insisted Fernando wear.
Fernando shook his head. âMaybe on Margoâs phone on the galaxy or whatever itâs called.â
âThe cloud?â Cal stifled a laugh, although he much preferred Fernandoâs substitution. âWhen she wakes up, sheâll show me herself. I donât think itâll take much convincing.â
âWhen she wakes.â Fernando rubbed his hands together. âYou have faith I lack.â
Cal didnât know how to respond. He hoped his belief in Margoâs awakening would ease the worries Fernando carried. As much as he wanted to be heroic or inspirational, his stubborn hope that Margo would recover seemed selfish. He worried about Fernando if Margo never woke up. Would Fernando descend into a state of despair that even Cal wouldnât be able to retrieve him from? Or would his anger consume his heart, and then what would happen to them?
Their relationship was growing beautifully, entwining their lives together, so it hurt Cal to his core, knowing it could all fall apart. Just another reminder that nothing in life was set in stone, no matter how happy Cal and Fernando were right now. Margoâs death could change it instantly.
Margo had to survive, because Cal didnât want a life that didnât include Fernando by his side.
âTed wouldnât be too proud of me. Heâd be disappointed that I was giving up hope on Margo.â
Cal jerked. Fernando rarely mentioned Ted in such a tender tone. âTedâs kind of the reason Margoâs in a coma in the first place, donât you think?â
âMaybe if I didnât kill Ted, the only father I had the past ten years, Iââ
âYou had toâ¦do what you did. Or more people would have died. Me, for instance.â Cal attempted to laugh, but Fernandoâs eyes were so forlorn, he regretted his attempt to make a joke. But he had never seen Fernando in such a state of melancholy. All Cal wanted was to make him smile, help him believe everything will be fine.
He clenched his fists at the mere thought of Ted and his right-hand woman, Rita. They had done this, caused Fernando so much pain.
Cal had to ensure that his own fury didnât consume him. Heâd channel his rage into something more productive, like his training. He hadnât forgotten Ritaâs threatening note, and her warning had pushed him to hone his skills.
