Chapter 16

“I’ll take the night shift with Margo.” Cal stood beside Fernando, who was having trouble keeping his eyes open, slumped in the armchair.

Fernando rubbed his forehead. “I’d like to fight you on this, but I’m too exhausted.”

Cal pulled up a chair to sit next to him. “You feeling okay?”

Fernando scooted forward to pat Margo’s foot. “It’s been over a month. Dr. Kim says he can’t decipher Ted’s notes. He doesn’t know how much of the healing vial to give to Margo.”

“He’ll figure it out.”

Fernando’s eyes were distant as he stared at his sister. “Halloween is coming. Margo’s favorite.”

“She does love to dress up.”

“Mostly she dressed me up.” Fernando winced. “I only went along to make her happy.”

“Oh shit, there better be photos.” Cal imagined an array of embarrassing costumes that Margo would have insisted Fernando wear.

Fernando shook his head. “Maybe on Margo’s phone on the galaxy or whatever it’s called.”

“The cloud?” Cal stifled a laugh, although he much preferred Fernando’s substitution. “When she wakes up, she’ll show me herself. I don’t think it’ll take much convincing.”

“When she wakes.” Fernando rubbed his hands together. “You have faith I lack.”

Cal didn’t know how to respond. He hoped his belief in Margo’s awakening would ease the worries Fernando carried. As much as he wanted to be heroic or inspirational, his stubborn hope that Margo would recover seemed selfish. He worried about Fernando if Margo never woke up. Would Fernando descend into a state of despair that even Cal wouldn’t be able to retrieve him from? Or would his anger consume his heart, and then what would happen to them?

Their relationship was growing beautifully, entwining their lives together, so it hurt Cal to his core, knowing it could all fall apart. Just another reminder that nothing in life was set in stone, no matter how happy Cal and Fernando were right now. Margo’s death could change it instantly.

Margo had to survive, because Cal didn’t want a life that didn’t include Fernando by his side.

“Ted wouldn’t be too proud of me. He’d be disappointed that I was giving up hope on Margo.”

Cal jerked. Fernando rarely mentioned Ted in such a tender tone. “Ted’s kind of the reason Margo’s in a coma in the first place, don’t you think?”

“Maybe if I didn’t kill Ted, the only father I had the past ten years, I—”

“You had to…do what you did. Or more people would have died. Me, for instance.” Cal attempted to laugh, but Fernando’s eyes were so forlorn, he regretted his attempt to make a joke. But he had never seen Fernando in such a state of melancholy. All Cal wanted was to make him smile, help him believe everything will be fine.

He clenched his fists at the mere thought of Ted and his right-hand woman, Rita. They had done this, caused Fernando so much pain.

Cal had to ensure that his own fury didn’t consume him. He’d channel his rage into something more productive, like his training. He hadn’t forgotten Rita’s threatening note, and her warning had pushed him to hone his skills.
